An interview with a newcomer to the Modest Fashion community, Khadijah, 24, and her thoughts on Modest Fashion.

So firstly, what is modesty to you?

There are a few meanings behind modesty to me other than merely covering up. For someone that’s been living all my 23 years as a muslim and not covering up according to my religion, I find being modest is also reflected from how one presents themselves from their actions and characteristics.

That brings us to our next question, what is modest fashion in your own words?

Modest fashion to me is to be able to look fashionable while covering up. Layerings, boxy silhouettes & oversized outfits are a few of the modest fashion styles that I’m into.

Do you think modest fashion should be universal or should it be strictly religious or cultural?

I personally don’t think that modest fashion should be labelled as religious or cultural as it is also considered as a fashion statement these days.

Why in Singapore, is modest fashion seen as related to Malay Muslim fashion?

Is it really? For me personally, I don’t believe that modest fashion is seen as Malay Muslim fashion as modest fashion is actually one of the few fashion trends to dress up while covering oneself appropriately.

Why do you think Modest Fashion is considered “boring”?

Well, if one does not know how to spice up the way they dress while still being modest then yes, it will be considered as boring.

What are some of the brands you know that promote modest fashion the best?

I’m not too sure of the different brands that promote modest fashion but instead I see how something (a type garment) that is not modest, that’s sold on its own can be made modest when being put together with something else (that covers up).

To you, is Modest Fashion just a phase or trend?

yes, it is.

As a person who just began your Modest journey, how would you redefine the meaning of Modest Fashion in your own words?

I would say modest fashion doesn’t specifically mean that you have to be covered from head to toe, it could also mean not wearing body hugging clothes. Everything can be considered modest depending on how one dresses themselves up.
